To Know Canine First Aid Is A Lot More Than Just Owning A First Aid Kit
About the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to discover a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and spent time playing in them for awhile. By the time she came back inside the house the burrs had managed to work themselves firmly into spots on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was after hours so the Vet was not open and a visit to the animal hospital would probably have been very costly. So she had to put up with my tearful yet laughing undertaking as I managed to one by one work those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for upwards of two hours. They were matted so severely and up next to the skin that cutting them out was not an option.
A tranquilizer of some sort would have been useful but I didn't have a single thing for her. And because there was no blood or serious injury, taking a trip to the emergency hospital was not required ... that time.
That is a heart breaking yet interesting story to tell and hopefully an experience she has not remembered over the years. It was also a less serious thing although very painful and frustrating for both of us. But it might have been worse.
As a committed pet owner you must know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more critical emergencies. You oftentimes will be able to save on Vet costs for smaller problems like the one I had. But you may possibly find yourself in a situation where you need to help soothe your pup's pain or perform life-saving actions until you can reach the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is certainly a smart move but you also need to know what to do and how to react in an actual emergency. Be sure you have phone numbers conveniently located for both your regular Vet as well as the nearby emergency animal hospital. And learn about basic canine first aid on your own.
I've never needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my dog and maybe you haven't needed to either. But would you know what normally to do if faced with a life-threatening situation with regards to your own dog?
